Peri-implant diseases remain one of the most significant long-term threats to implant success. Early detection, accurate monitoring, and appropriate intervention are critical, yet clinical approaches remain variable and, at times, controversial. This presentation will review contemporary concepts in peri-implant health surveillance, diagnostic tools for early disease detection, and evidence-based treatment strategies for peri-implantitis, with particular attention to emerging technologies and adjunctive therapies.
Long-term implant success depends on the dentist and hygienist working from a shared understanding of what to look for and what to do about it. When both clinicians use the same clinical and radiographic warning signs and operate within a consistent in-office protocol, early intervention becomes possible and implant failures more preventable. This session equips dental teams with the knowledge and practical tools to build that shared approach.

Dr. Glogauer has more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and his work has been recognized and published in various journals, including the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research and Journal of Periodontology.

Scientific advances have shown that effective biofilm management rests on combining leading-edge technology with optimal patient skills, supported by appropriate motivation. For many years the emphasis was placed on calculus removal rather than biofilm control, which shaped oral hygiene instruction (OHI) recommendations.
The introduction of biofilm-disclosing solutions represents a significant step forward in this area. In addition, bleeding on brushing (BOB) is a more instructive and engaging clinical indicator for assessing the bleeding index, even before the periodontal probe is used. This approach helps patients better understand that gingival bleeding reflects an underlying inflammatory process that may have systemic repercussions on their overall health.
Historically, preventive care in dental hygiene relied on outdated protocols centred mainly on flossing. However, the most recent scientific data (2025) highlight the need for an individualized, evidence-based approach to OHI.
